The SeniorScore for Paterson, NJ
Compared to the national average of 72 and the state average of 76, Paterson’s SeniorScore of 59 is significantly lower. While Paterson registered a score of 65 in Health & Safety, low scores of 56 in Recreation & Leisure and 53 in General Quality of Life combined with a very low score of 37 in Finances contributed to the city’s low score.
Paterson scored 65 in Health & Safety because it has 25 hospitals, 1,821 pharmacies, 253 senior living facilities and a very high number of Medicare-registered physicians accessible for seniors. However, this category’s score was hurt by a very high violent crime rate.
Paterson earned a score of 56 in Recreation & Leisure and has 206 golf courses, 12 parks, 10 malls and shopping centers and 47 movie theaters in and around the city. There are also 1,048 grocery stores, 515 health clubs and gyms and 697 churches in the city.
Paterson’s score of 53 in General Quality of Life can be attributed to a very high population density, below average air quality and very crowded public transportation. However, the city has nice weather throughout the year, with average mean temperatures, average winters and pleasant summers.
Finances was Paterson’s lowest-scoring category with 37, due to an overall cost of living that is significantly higher than the national average. Property taxes, city sales taxes, assisted living costs, nursing home costs and home health care costs that are significantly high contribute to this low score. Additionally, the city has drastically lower household income and per capita income averages than national figures.
