Aging often comes with challenges, and that's especially true for seniors with disabilities that impact their quality of life. Seniors with disabilities may find it hard to make decisions, care for themselves, move around their home or perform other tasks that they were once able to do. If you are disabled, you may be concerned about your ability to live independently and wonder whether you'll be able to get help when you need it. It can be comforting to know that you're not alone – more than 46% of elderly people have a disability, and the number of seniors and individuals with disabilities is expected to double over the next 20 years.
Fortunately, assisted living can be a good option for disabled seniors who need an extra level of support. Assisted living provides help with your daily activities, special programming for seniors with disabilities and access to trained, compassionate caregivers who understand your unique needs. In this guide, you'll find information about how to choose an assisted living facility for people with disabilities and ways you may be able to get help paying for care.
Common Disabilities That Impact Seniors
There are many types of disabilities that affect seniors, including those that they've had since birth and disabilities that may have developed in their later years. Below, learn more about common disabilities and the impact they can have on the elderly.
Intellectual Disabilities
Intellectual disabilities are disabilities that develop any time before age 18. They can have a number of causes, including problems during pregnancy and birth, genetic conditions, exposure to toxins and diseases. Seniors with intellectual disabilities may have trouble with life and social skills, reasoning, learning and problem solving. The number of people who have an intellectual disability and are aged 60+ is expected to grow to 1.2 million by 2030, indicating a growing need for facilities that specialize in caring for cognitively impaired individuals.
Intellectual disabilities may include:
- Down syndrome
- Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)
- Prader-Willi syndrome
- Fragile X syndrome
- Autism
Sensory Disabilities
Sensory disabilities affect a senior's ability to process information related to hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell. These disabilities can make it hard for seniors to understand what others are saying, read, enjoy food and navigate the world around them. According to research, 67% of seniors in the U.S. have two or more sensory deficits, with impairment of taste being the most common.
Sensory disabilities include:
- Sensory processing disorder
- Dyslexia
- Hearing loss/deafness
- Low vision/blindness
Physical Disabilities
Physical disabilities are very common in older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately one in four seniors have a disability that affects their mobility, which can include difficulties with walking, standing and interacting with their environment. Physically disabled seniors can suffer from isolation if they're unable to drive or leave their home. They may also have trouble with using the toilet, showering and getting dressed.
Physical disabilities could be due to conditions like:
- Spina bifida
- Cerebral palsy
- Muscular dystrophy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Acquired brain injury
- Epilepsy
- Dwarfism
Mental Disabilities
This category includes mental illnesses and disorders that may be disabling if left untreated. The Social Security Blue Book also classifies neurocognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's, as a mental disability. Approximately 15% of U.S. seniors are impacted by behavioral health problems, and 4.8% of the nation's older adults suffer from a serious mental illness that strongly affects their quality of life. Seniors with mental disabilities may experience impairment in functioning, low feelings of self-worth, hopelessness, racing thoughts and agitation. Older adults who have a cognitive disorder can suffer from confusion, irritability, memory problems and restlessness.
Mental disabilities can be due to conditions like:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar disorder
- Dementia
- Personality disorders, including borderline, obsessive-compulsive or paranoid personality disorder
