Astoria Health and Rehabilitation Center

I don't even want to give this place one star!!!!! But if I don't, I can't enter this review.Our mother fell and broke her hip at the beginning of September, 2020. After her hospital stay, we were told that The Village at Vienna Square-Astoria was the place to go. Well let me tell you this place has a lot of people bamboozled! I say I'm very disappointed, but you know that word just doesn’t work for me.. I am appalled that so many employees in this facility, from the Executive Director on down to the front Receptionist. These people are supposed to taking care of not only our mother but so many others as well. When we call we always get directed to a voicemail, sometimes the message says leave a voicemail…then it says can’t leave a message at this time. When we actually do get a response, whether it’s a voice or a text, there is a “I don’t care attitude” from the respondent. Or we're told they are not the person we need to talk to, so we're back to square one. My question would be why would these type of persons work in a place that need people who actually care about our elderly.From the time my mother went into this rehab facility, we have not been informed properly, this is unacceptable! On the rare occasion we actually do get to speak to an Astorian employee, we ask our questions, like why isn’t our mother getting therapy twice a day?, or why would her TV remote and phone be over on the dresser to where she can’t get out of bed to get them?, or why isn’t she being offered anything to drink or eat outside of her meals?…. etc. My mother has short term dementia and her struggles are very real to her. She is terrified and calls us constantly about her fears, crying frantically asking for help, then says she is so terrified and feels so alone. Where are the people in this facility who are supposed to be helping with all of this anxiety?We were finally able to see our mother after a month and I have to say, it was awful seeing our mother with the life being pulled out of her. She has always been a vibrant, happy person. To see her looking so drawn and sad and having no interest in anything at all. She said she feels sick all the time too. Then said she's ready to die.I know our mother isn’t the only one in there who needs constant care, but she is OUR mother and we would like her to be taken good care of. Otherwise, what are we paying for!This facility seems to care more about the architecture more than the actual people who are in rehab or actually living there.

I would never refer anyone to Astoria after the experience our family had while our loved one was there. It was practically impossible to ever talk to anyone , no one would return our many calls. Our loved one was there for skilled nursing and rehab. He was left in the standard Covid Quarantine for a month instead of 14 days after returning from the hospital. When we were finally able to speak to someone , his social worker had no idea that he was still in quarantine and not been receiving the rehab he was supposed to be getting. If we were lucky enough to finally get a hold of someone , we would get conflicting reports. We never were able to talk to his assigned Dr. to find out how he was doing. The physical therapist never told us that there was no improvement. Our loved one was recently released because " there was no more we could do for him". We had him transported to his home and 1 hour after arriving home he collapsed so we called 911 and he was rushed to the hospital. He has been diagnosed with 2 broken ribs and both of his carotid arteries are blocked .One artery is 70% blocked and he is having surgery tomorrow. How can something like this not be detected if he was in a skilled nursing facility like Astoria for approx. 2 months !
