Hoeger House

The day we arrived with my mom, I met another patient’s mom waiting outside (Covid restrictions). She warned me about this place and I wish I would have listened, but the Olathe Hospital recommended Hoeger House so it had to be a good place right, wrong! Olathe Hospital told us our mom would receive 2-3 hours of rehab daily, which they said would be so much better than several days a week of in-home rehab. Hoeger House informed us that this was not true and they ‘wished the hospital would quit telling people that’. In fact mom did not receive any rehab until 6 days after she was admitted, then it was 45 minutes 3-4 days/week and nothing on the weekends. They never once cleaned mom’s room during her 3-week stay. They did not bathe my mom, or offer to assist, which at that time she was not able to get into the shower by herself. Mom literally washed her hair over the sink using a plastic cup. The nights I would bring mom clean laundry and care packages, mom would stay awake and watch the nurse go thru the bag after she thought mom was asleep. On the night before mom was to go home, my father unexpectedly passed away. We arrived at 9:45pm to tell mom this devastating news. We obviously were going to take her home that night. As we were packing, the nurse was so uncaring and so dramatic about ‘all the paperwork’ that she would need to complete before mom left and that mom would be marked down as AMA (against medical advice) because she was leaving early. She was scheduled to be discharged the very next day. I suppose they expected mom to stay by herself after just learning that her husband of 58 years just passed away. I called a few days later and talked to the director about the AMA statement on the documents and it was changed. Oh and Hoeger House had a 1-hour heads-up that we were coming to tell mom, as we had to get permission due to Covid restrictions. Now we know why they ask you to sign a paper during the admission process that states if you have an issue you will discuss it with them first. Hoeger House, do not attempt to blame any of this on the pandemic, as there is zero excuse for lack of care, cleanliness and empathy to your patients and families. This place has left us with a deep scar and a fear and hesitation of ever having to work with another rehab facility.

DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE! My mother had surgery at Olathe Medical Center and she went to Hoeger House for rehabilitation. What a disaster. The nurses are incompetent. I don't know how many times we had to tell them that she has to take certain medicines at certain times that she never got. For weeks we battled this. We talked to so many nurses and aides but it went through one ear and out the other. The nursing staff often gossiped and talked about crude things, sometimes sexual. This is just some of the stuff my mom, myself and other family and friends could hear from her room! We ended up getting her moved to another room but telling the head people at Hoeger House was like talking to children. The head person at Hoeger House is young. She lacks the the maturity and competency to run a facility. A few years ago when a friend was there, the facility was run by a nice, attentive man and the place was clean and they had great care. We were excited that mom was going to Hoeger House, but now the facility is completely different and seems to have gone down the hill in a short amount of time. If we knew that Hoeger House had turned into this we would have never brought mom here.The place is a mess. Dirty and the halls are always cluttered. The public restrooms were unsanitary and often had pubic hairs on the floor. The nurses have little areas in the halls where they don't really do anything but sit on their phones, do homework and leave food and trash everywhere. Another major issue is call lights, don't expect them to be answered. They'll give you the run around of being busy but when you are a small place and have multiple nurses and aides working who are sitting down most of their shifts then they have time! Up to 45 minutes my mom would wait for someone to come help her to the bathroom ! My mom was supposed to get her room cleaned each day. Try maybe once a week, if that. We would have to ask multiple times for someone to come clean the room, bathroom and take out trash. When someone would come we were told it was the head of housekeeping. He spent two minutes in the room running around like he couldn't couldn't get out fast enough!In conclusion just stay away from Hoeger House!
