My husband is addicted to nicotine and would not give up smoking on his own. In December, he was hospitalized for 16 days. At the hospital he was not allowed to smoke and they had him wear a nicotine patch. I thought if he kicked this habit, at least something good could come of his accident and subsequent confinement. Then he was transferred to Hondo Rehab. He told them he was a smoker, so the patches were discontinued. He managed to 'bum' cigarettes from other residents. One day while visiting, I was shocked that a staff member asked him if he wanted to go out for a smoke. I had no idea he had resumed the habit. A 'healthcare' facility should discourage smoking, not allow it. If he had stayed on the patches ('sorry smoker, there's no smoking here'), and unable to get them himself, he might have finally kicked this dangerous habit. Instead, due to their smoking policies he's back to smoking.
