Oakwood Estates at 5303 Bermuda Dr. in St. Louis, MO is the facility previously known as Abby Care Center. When you enter the facility, (if a state inspection or follow-up state inspection is underway), you are overwhelmed by the fresh clean smell, beautiful shiny floors, cascading waterfall, and overall sense of “this is a really nice place.” You also see lots of nursing personnel bustling all over the place, smiling, and giving the appearance of being friendly. You really believe that your loved one will be safe, secure, and very well taken care of, if they are admitted to this facility. You silently pray that they have an open bed for him/her.On the other hand, if a state inspection is not underway, the fresh clean smell is gone, the beautiful shiny floors are not as shiny, and you are faced with the reality that the facility appearance is not an indication of the care your loved one will receive. The real eye opener is the disappearance of all the friendly, smiling nursing personnel, bustling all over the place. You also realize, the name change will not protect the innocent residents who rely on the nursing home staff for their safety and well -being.Unfortunately, the nursing care provided under the old Abbey Care Center, by the same nursing staff, is the same, under Oakwood Estates. They have a lot of residents and a disproportionately small staff. Some of the nursing staff care about the residents and some of them don't. The one's that care do a really good job of taking care of the residents and it is evident, whether there is a state inspection in progress or family members are present. Unfortunately, there are far too few of these caring nurses and they are frequently overworked to the point of exhaustion. There is a much larger ratio of nursing personnel who do not care. They are generally rude, grouchy and concerned only with their next break. Resident medications, safety, welfare, cleanliness, meals etc. is a very low
