The long term care here is absolutely awful. We were happy with the rehab at the Sullivan center, those people cared and were attentive. When our family member was moved to long term care at the Hosier center things rapidly changed. The room was less than 50% of space (even though we are paying the same amount of money) and our family member was told the roommate "was here long before you". We have since moved our family member to another facility. Don't be fooled.

My mother just got out of "Our Lady of the Valley" (OLV) in Roanoke, VA after having rehab for a case of pneumonia. I was told by the rehab therapists, who OLV contracts that out to Genesis Rehab Services, my mother, who is disabled, could stand and transition from her wheelchair to another chair, toilet or bed. However when I got her home this was not the case. The rehab therapists told me twice they issued orders to OLV's nursing staff to discontinue using the sit-to-stand lift on my mother so she could get used to getting in and out of bed again without it. The nursing staff either never got that order or they chose to ignore it. My mother was further debilitated because of it. The food at OLV is nearly inedible and I would describe it as "slop". My mother would barely eat it and when she got home, it seemed to me she was malnourished. I even cooked Sunday dinner for her and brought it to her so that she would at least have one good meal a week during her stay at OLV.OLV made several promises to me that they would give my mother a pneumonia shot but they never did. I was told this by Jessica Dowdy, Director of Social Work. Jessica Dowdy also told me that my mother would need a nebulizer in order to continue her albuterol breathing treatments and OLV would supply us with a nebulizer and my mother's insurance/Medicare would pay for it. However the day I got my mother home, I was told by OLV my mother's insurance/Medicare would not pay for it and I would have to buy one myself. I had the albuterol but no way to administer it. I did get a nebulizer but I should have been told beforehand insurance wouldn't cover it.Jessica Dowdy seems to me to be someone who will promise anything to the family members just to pacify them for the moment but is short on following through. I don't know if she's so busy she can't keep up with everything she promises or that's just her work habit. The CNAs OLV hires are basically off the street people without any medical care background. OLV even ran an ad saying they would train people to be CNAs. So it seems they hire people who have either worked a checkout line in a store or flipped burgers in a fast food restaurant, give them a smattering of training and then put them in caring for patients. One of these CNAs even made an off-color remark to my mother when the CNA was showering my mother saying to her she was "like bathing three people." A rehab therapist even threatened my mother saying she could not come home unless she could stand up. When I went to visit my mother that evening, she was crying and she told me what the Genesis rehab therapist said to her. The next morning I went down to the OLV rehab gym myself and quite loudly told them if they ever threatened my mother like that again I was going to take it as mental and emotional abuse and I was going to cause "real trouble" meaning I would seek legal action against Genesis Rehab Services and OLV.I have since purchased a sit-to-stand lift for my mother and I can now get her up with that but upon coming home, she was confined to her bed for over two weeks until all the items I needed arrived. Fortunately I am able to take care of her cleanliness needs while in bed.I also now have in-home rehab services coming in to see if they can get my mother to stand and then eventually turn and transition without the lift again.I will never trust OLV with nursing care again. In my opinion, OLV isn't suited to kennel a dog much less putting them in the care of loved ones.I would advise anyone not to put their family members in OLV or move them to another facility if they already have one in residency there.
