As the largest city in the nation, New York is home to more than 1.2 million seniors. The over-65 population is, in fact, growing more quickly than most other age demographics, with 237,000 new seniors added to NYC's numbers between 2009 and 2019; this more than double the increase of New York residents under 65. The senior population is spread fairly evenly across New York's five boroughs, with seniors outnumbering children under 13.
The SeniorScore for New York City is 73. That score encompasses the high-level medical facilities and health care available in the city, with 98 hospitals in the region. It also reflects the unparalleled opportunities for recreation and leisure in New York. However, NYC has one of the highest costs of living in the United States, and it has a higher crime rate and poorer air quality than most of the nation.
The World Health Organization considers New York an age-friendly city. Seniors have access to a variety of resources, including about 250 senior centers throughout the five boroughs. Many of these centers offer breakfast, lunch or home-delivered meals, and all of them provide various recreational and health-related activities.
Seniors are eligible for substantial discounts on New York's vaunted public transportation system, and many senior centers also have transportation options for seniors unable to use public transit. The New York Foundation for Senior Citizens helps seniors find affordable housing through its Home Sharing Program. In addition, seniors can take advantage of the city's world-renowned arts offerings, its large public park system, its popular sports venues and its exciting food scene.
