Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, offers seniors plenty of history and nature to enjoy. Tallahassee's population of 194,500 has seen steady growth over the last decade, with 10.0% of the population being people aged 65 and older. Measuring a city's SeniorScore allows seniors and their caregivers to decide if that city is ideal for their unique needs based on how the city scores across four categories: Recreation & Leisure, Finances, Health & Safety and General Quality of Life. Tallahassee's SeniorScore is 70, just two points below the nation's score of 72. The city's highest category was General Quality of Life, with a 73. Florida has long been recognized as an ideal state for seniors to spend retirement, due to its mild winters and overall warm climate. Tallahassee's proximity to plenty of gulf coast beaches elevates the SeniorScore quite a bit. The next highest category, Finances, follows closely, with a score of 68. Florida does not have a state tax, which incentivizes financially conscious residents. A combination of lower-than-average property and sales taxes, with a higher-than-average monthly household income, bolsters the Finances category. Seniors and their relatives can expect to pay approximately $45,714 for home health care costs yearly, which is average when compared to the nation's median.
Tallahassee scored lowest in the Health & Safety category with a 55. Though the city has an average amount of Medicare registered physicians, it enjoys a higher-than-average number of home health care providers.
In this guide, we discuss the cost of home care in Tallahassee and surrounding cities, as well as helpful age-in-place resources the city offers its senior residents.
The Cost of Home Care in Tallahassee, FL
Seniors should expect to pay an average of $4,185 a month for home care costs in Tallahassee, according to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey. This is only slightly higher than the median cost across the state of Florida of $4,004, but over $100 less than the national average of $4,290. When comparing costs of home care versus the cost of home health care, it's important to consider that typically, home health care provides everything standard home care does, in addition to other limited medical services, like medication management and diabetes monitoring. This does make home health care slightly more expensive.
Tallahassee's cost of home care is slightly more affordable when compared to other cities in Florida. Nearby Panama City is actually $300 more for both home care and home health care, perhaps because of its status as a gulf coast city. Traveling east towards Jacksonville, prices are only $10 more a month for home care, and traveling further south towards Central Florida, seniors can expect to pay approximately $180 less a month for home care but about $57 more for home health care.
