Ann Arbor, the fifth-largest city in Michigan, is home to more than 4 million residents, approximately 460,000 of whom are seniors aged 65 and older. Ann Arbor has, in recent years, seen a large increase in the numbers of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control, yearly deaths increased by 43.43% between 2014 and 2018, rising from 99 per year to 142. During that same period, overall deaths only increased by 18.53%, indicating that Alzheimer’s is a growing concern for Ann Arbor seniors.
To combat this trend, there are a number of memory care communities in the Ann Arbor area whose mission is to protect those struggling with Alzheimer’s while providing them with programs and therapies that help slow the rate of mental decline. In this guide, we discuss the cost of memory care and provide a list of local community resources to help seniors living with memory loss and their loved ones find valuable supports and services.
The SeniorScore for Ann Arbor, MI
Ann Arbor has a SeniorScore of 76, which is five points higher than Michigan's score of 71 and four points higher than the national score of 72. Ann Arbor received its highest score of 73 in Health & Safety, which was followed by a score of 67 in Recreation & Leisure.
With the University of Michigan Hospitals-Michigan Medicine — rated number one in Michigan and number 11 in the U.S. News and World Report Honor Roll — seniors can rest assured they have high-quality health care at their fingertips. The hospital also has a dedicated Alzheimer’s Disease Center, which offers a variety of services. Ann Arbor is considered a safe city, with low crime rates and a high number of fire stations. There are nearly 150 golf courses, 92 health clubs and gyms and seven movie theaters in and around Ann Arbor. The city's many parks, which include botanical gardens and plenty of paved walking trails and picnicking spots provide seniors with many choices for exercise and recreation. The University of Michigan also offers free events, from panel speakers to free museum memberships.
Ann Arbor’s lower score of 65 in the General Quality of Life category is partly because of the frigid winters, but low public school quality ranking and safety ratings also play a part. However, shorter daily commutes and high public transportation ridership, including free senior transportation, help offset those minuses.
One reason Ann Arbor received its lowest score of 63 in the Finances category was its higher cost of living. Although health care costs are also high, workers here earn more than nationally, and seniors can save money by keeping their Social Security earnings, tax-free.
