Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city, is a traditional Southern town with roughly 132,000 residents, about one in 10 of whom are seniors. As its population continues to age, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia are having an increasingly profound impact on residents. Fortunately, due to the state’s many interventions, residents with Alzheimer’s are experiencing improved services and supports and a better quality of life. In 2014, Alzheimer’s was the primary diagnosis in about 9% of deaths in Columbia. In 2018, this condition was the cause of death in less than 8% of cases. Although the total number of deaths citywide increased by nearly 12% between 2014 and 2018, the number of Alzheimer’s-related deaths dropped by nearly 4%.
For many seniors living with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, memory care communities provide valuable services and programs to slow the progression of the disease. These facilities provide around-the-clock care and monitoring and specialized therapeutic programming.
In this guide, we’ve outlined the cost of memory care services in and around Columbia and summarized available community-based services and supports for seniors living with memory-related conditions as well as their families and caregivers.
The SeniorScore for Columbia, SC
The SeniorScore is a data-driven livability index that evaluates how well-suited a city is for seniors based on a variety of factors that contribute to the comfort and convenience of older residents. The SeniorScore of Columbia is 73, which is slightly higher than the state and national scores of 72.
The category in which Columbia scores highest is General Quality of Life at 69. The city experiences ideal average temperatures throughout the year, with mild winters and very warm summers, and it receives high levels of rainfall compared to other U.S. cities. It has a very dense population of 8,743 people per square mile, but residents have a short daily commute, which may indicate that there are many retailers, restaurants, government buildings and medical offices nearby. While its public school quality rankings are low, the city has a high graduation rate, which correlates with better housing, less unemployment and more civic engagement.
Columbia rates similarly across the SeniorScore’s other three metrics, including Recreation & Leisure, Health & Safety and Finances, with respective scores of 64, 63 and 62. Because it’s a college town with a large portion of its population comprised of students and young professionals, Columbia has a relatively low percentage of older adults. This may lead to limited resources and programs for seniors. It’s rich in recreational amenities, however, with 27 golf courses, 23 parks and a dozen movie theaters. The city also has a high number of Medicare-registered physicians, 14 hospitals and 453 pharmacies. It has a low cost of living and relatively affordable memory care costs, which may make it a financially feasible option for seniors and families with budget considerations.
