Lexington, Kentucky, is home to over 323,000 residents, 12.6% of whom are aged 65 and older. While cases of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are rising in many cities across the nation every year, Lexington’s numbers are slowly decreasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Alzheimer's-related deaths in Lexington decreased by 18.6% between 2014 and 2018, falling from 140 to 114 per year. Over the same time period, the overall death rate rose by 13.1%, suggesting that Alzheimer’s is not closely linked to the number of overall deaths.
While it is heartening that Lexington has seen a fall in the number of Alzheimer's cases, the disease continues to impact families across the city. Thankfully, there are several memory care communities in Lexington that can support seniors with dementia through the provision of therapies, 24-hour supervision and tailored care. Lexington has a SeniorScore of 76, surpassing the Kentucky average of 75 and the U.S. average of 72. The city received high scores in all four categories: both Health & Safety and Finances were given a score of 68, Recreation & Leisure received a score of 67 and General Quality of Life earned a score of 66.
The high score in the Health & Safety category was due to the area’s accessible, high-quality health care and the abundance of Medicare-accredited providers. Lexington is home to several modern medical institutions, including the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital, Baptist Health Lexington and Saint Joseph East, as well as two VA Medical Center locations. The city's high score in the Finances category was due to the overall cost of living and the state’s tax rates, both of which are significantly lower than national average.
The high Recreation & Leisure score was the result of the vast number of senior-friendly comforts in the city. Seniors can enjoy 46 golf courses, including Picadome Golf Course and Idle Hour Country Club, 31 shopping centers, 44 health clubs and multiple churches. There is also ample green space with 14 parks close to the city center, including Triangle Park, McConnell Springs Park, Gratz Park and other nature parks, such as Kentucky’s state botanical garden. The city’s pleasant climate, high levels of education and shorter commute times all contributed to Lexington's General Quality of Life score.
Memory care is often provided in special units in assisted living facilities and includes all of the same services, such as cooking, laundry, supervision and activities. However, memory care units also provide Alzheimer's-specific programs and specially trained staff to help support seniors with cognitive and behavioral issues. Due to the enhanced services and additional security a memory care unit provides, memory care typically costs more than other types of residential senior care. There is no definitive source for memory care pricing; however, the cost of memory care is generally 20-30% higher than the cost of assisted living. To estimate the cost of memory care, an additional 25% was added to the cost of standard assisted living reported in Genworth Financial's 2020 Cost of Care Survey. Using this calculation, the average monthly cost of memory care in Lexington is $5,500 per month. This is higher than the statewide average of $4,624 and lower than the national average of $5,375.

Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living The Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living (BGAAAIL) exists to support seniors and people with disabilities. It has an extensive list of valuable resources and programs for seniors with dementia, as well as their caregivers and family members.
