St. Augustine is a city founded in 1565 on Florida's northeast coast, making it possibly the oldest in the country. Of its estimated 15,415 population, 22.7% are recorded as being aged 65 and over, the age group most likely to develop dementia. According to a study conducted by the Alzheimer's Association, dementia is associated with the deaths of one in three seniors. Fortunately, St. Augustine appears to be bucking the trend. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recorded a 25.49% drop in dementia-related deaths in the city between 2014-2018. In the same period, deaths from all causes rose by 17.24%.
Although the CDC's findings are welcome, it's wise to not become complacent. St. Augustine's drop in dementia-related deaths is unusual. The situation may change. Fortunately, the city is home to numerous memory care communities ready to welcome seniors dealing with cognitive decline. The communities provide safe and secure environments for vulnerable adults and treatments that help them manage their condition. St. Augustine also offers a wealth of resources for those entering senior living facilities, some of which this guide deals with in more detail. St. Augustine has a SeniorScore of 73, which, although three points below Florida's average, is one above the national average. More than 100 data points are evaluated and each given a score, with the total SeniorScore representing the area's senior-friendliness. There are four categories, with St. Augustine performing best in General Quality of Life. Major factors in its position include the ideal mean temperatures that ensure seniors aren't subjected to dramatic changes in weather and the short daily commute times, making the city easy to navigate.
The city also performs well in the Finances category. Florida is a zero income tax state, which allows seniors to hold on to more of their retirement income than many of their peers across the country. The city can also boast mean and median household incomes higher than national averages. Per capita incomes are higher too. In the Recreation & Leisure category, St. Augustine loses points because the city doesn't operate any gyms or health clubs. However, it offers many other ways for seniors to get exercise, such as the 40 golf courses surrounding the area. These include World Golf Village, created by the PGA to celebrate the game. St. Augustine also has seven malls and 34 grocery stores for seniors who like to shop.
In the final category, Health & Safety, the small city gains points for being home to 15 senior living facilities, giving older residents a choice of locations in which to spend their later years. There is also a hospital, the nonprofit Flagler Hospital, ranked by U.S. News & World Report as high-performing in geriatrics and nephrology. Additionally, the city has a high number of Medicare-registered physicians.
In St. Augustine, memory care communities are located within assisted living facilities. These communities have 24/7 security and the residents are continuously monitored by staff for their own safety. Additionally, professionals deliver therapies and treatments that may slow down the advance of dementia. As a consequence of its additional services, memory care is more expensive than assisted living, typically between 20-30%. The 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey records the assisted living costs for St.Augustine and its neighboring cities. Unfortunately, there isn't a memory care equivalent, so the following figures are the assisted living costs with 25% added.
Seniors in St. Augustine pay, on average, $5,188 per month for the services provided in their memory care communities. Although this is more than the state average of $4,625, the city's seniors pay $187 less per month than the average American. When comparing memory care costs, it's worth noting that many factors influence them, such as the cost of living in the area and staff-to-resident ratios.
Although St. Augustine's $5,188 costs are above-average for Florida, they are not the most expensive. In the state capital, Tallahassee, seniors pay an average of $6,883 for memory care, while in Gainesville, approximately 90 minutes inland, fees are $5,714. More affordable memory care communities can be found further south in Ocala, where costs average $5,000, and in Deltona, where seniors typically pay $5,063. Crossing into Georgia, Brunswick's costs are $5,155. To find significantly lower memory care costs, seniors need to travel to Valdosta, approximately two-and-a-half hours from St. Augustine, where fees are $3,025.

VA Aid and Attendance Benefits VA Aid and Attendance is a benefit available to veterans who have served in the U.S. military. It is also available to their spouses. The monthly payment is in addition to the VA pension and can be used to meet some of the costs of the recipient's memory care services. Alzheimer's Association - Central and North Florida The Central and North Florida chapter of the Alzheimer's Association provides local services in addition to the national services provided by the umbrella organization. ElderSource Long-Term Care ElderSource provides a service for seniors and their families that can help them identify the best long-term care communities for their needs and meet all or most of the costs through Medicaid. One of the long-term care team assesses seniors via a phone interview and, if the senior is eligible, places them on a waiting list. The team then helps the senior access the service most appropriate to their needs. Florida Ombudsman Program The ombudsman's purpose is to advocate for the rights of seniors living in the state's long-term care communities and work towards improving their safety and wellbeing within their communities. Ombudsmen are volunteers who pay regular visits to senior living facilities, talking to residents, listening to their concerns and investigating their complaints. Complaints can include minor issues, such as menu choices, to serious issues, such as abuse allegations.
