As the Director of the Fite Living Centre, I would like to quickly address “Aging in place” in Georgia. Regardless of what we are willing to do for our residents, we are governed by the guidelines set up by the state of Georgia. They decide who is appropriate for personal care and assisted living facilities in Ga. and who is not. Unfortunately, sometimes when a resident has had a significant decline and has lost the ability to bear their own weight or assist with their own self preservation, they are no longer deemed appropriate for any ALF or PCH by the state of Ga. If a facility decides to keep a resident who is below the minimum required guidelines and the state discovers this during an inspection, the facility will be cited and fined and the resident must immediately be moved to a nursing facility based on their condition. This typically does not allow families enough time to find a suitable home for their loved one and they are forced to take any arrangements that are available. Typically, this means a nursing facility without a waiting list and unfortunately nursing facilities without waiting lists are often not first choice options when placing a loved one.We get very attached to all of our residents and when this occurs it is always very emotional for the resident, their family, our staff and all parties involved. Fortunately it is very rare that we are forced to ask a resident to move. If this does occur however, a good facility will have very clear communication with the family in advance as to any changes that may be occurring in the future.
