It's extremely unconscionable how understaffed this place is. I'm writing this review because I don't know how else to reach the owners or management and let them know that their residents, including my mother, are suffering as a result of an extreme lack of staff availability. There's a complete lack of coordination. Most of the staff seems to be doing their best in difficult circumstances, except social work, who doesn't seem to feel it's their job to ever pick up the phone or return a phone call until their manager's manager is called twice. And the nurses are too busy to answer the phone, whether I call the unit, the unit manager, the nursing manager, OR page them from the front desk. My mother had an x-ray and infection test weeks ago and no one ever told me what the results were. The staff is being asked to implement a complex visitation system without adequate time or support on top of their normal responsibilities, resulting in a complete mess. When I have finally been allowed to visit, my mom was unable to see me for the entirety of the 2.5 visiting hours because staff didn't get her transferred to a wheelchair despite being asked repeatedly. Their online visitation portal is now down and no one from social work answers the phone to get a visit scheduled.I have been trying to hire a private aide for two weeks and I hope we're finally about to make it happen, but my mother would've had that support WEEKS ago if social work had returned my calls from the beginning. I also spent weeks trying to get my mom a bipap, because even once I brought the machine itself from home, nurses and social work kept telling me (when I was able to get them on the phone at all) that they didn't have a prescription for it, and no one felt it was their job to coordinate and contact the doctor or follow up to see where the prescription had gone.I have a day job that is suffering from the amount of time I need to spend calling this facility and every various specialist to get anything done, down to reminding the nurses to please administer an as-needed prescription that they keep telling me they can't without a doctor's order (which they have). My mom has even been repeatedly left to sit in her own feces or without water to drink for an hour at a time. She gets drymouth from a medication; how hard would it be to stock her up with additional water when they come around?I shouldn't have to hire and pay for a private aide to come into a facility where she's supposedly receiving 24/7 care. Please hire additional staff immediately!

I had a double knee replacement after a bad fall. Everyone was very professional and nice. My room was always clean. I enjoyed conversing with the staff and management, as well as other patients that were in my age range. Thank you to my doc who performed the surgery. And to Sunharbor who helped me with a very fast recovery.

Warning: there is a wait list to get in. We had a really great experience here. My dad has Alzheimer’s and is pretty confused. He’s been walking incorrectly with a hunched back and uneven gait for a while now and has always refused help. Somehow Sunharbor worked their magic and actually improved his overall poster and walking. His feet face forward and it doesn’t seem like he’s going to trip with every step. The therapists and nurses have a lot a patience and really know how to deescalate a confused patient situation. We had very real expectations of a nursing home/rehab coming in... and thankfully they exceeded ours.

As a former registered nurse of 40+ years I can confirm you will receive the highest level of care here with regard to both nursing and physical therapy. This rehab was highly recommended by all the staff at Winthrop hospital. Everyone is just lovely. I received both group and individual therapy sessions which I enjoyed. I preferred the group therapy because it was motivating. Lobby was busy which I also liked because I enjoy people watching and like being where the action is. Rest of the facility is pretty quiet. Food was good and I could order in whenever I chose. The on-site salon was a great perk. After being in the hospital I couldn’t wait to get my nails and hair done. Most importantly I can care for myself on my own again. My daughters don’t have to do my grocery shopping anymore. My quality of life is now better because of the rehab I received here.

The best therapy. I slept on the second floor in a new room. Hallway needs work but they were finishing up the renovation during my last weeks stay. I can walk all the way to end of my block to pick up my grand daughter from the school bus. All the nurses and helpers were extra nice and took good care of me. There is a waiting list at hospital to get in which was worrisome but it worked out.

After being wait listed to get in here while at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, we were finally able to get my Uncle into a private room with a window and flat screen tv. I was happy to see all the other patients, visitors and staff interacting in the afternoon together. Uncle Tony was treated with respect and love from his nurses on the second floor. Therapy happened in the gym. I stayed one day just to watch and see how it’s done. Thankfully there’s a model home so he could practice everything he would have to accomplish at home. Meals were great! He really enjoyed them. And of course we’d bring him in some additional treats that he loves from our Glen Cove Bakery. He got his haircut at the salon upstairs and probably interacted more with strangers and made more friends than he has in years. But most importantly, he’s functioning physically at a higher level than he has in a very very long time. He went from barely walking, to using a walker, and now on his own (cane occasionally, but still). All thanks to the therapists. My husband and I were really happy with the entire 10 and a half weeks my Uncle spent here. TIP: If you have any questions or issues just go to the Administrator Michele. She gets it done and taken care of ASAP. From needing more blankets regularly, to extra snacks, she’s your lady on the inside.

I was a patient here for 3 months. I had a wonderful experience. Therapy was terrific and I’m able to walk and function better than I could before my accident. My family visited whenever they wanted with no issues parking (free valet), and stayed as late as they wanted, no questions asked. Food was delicious with lots of choices. Lots to do on my downtime as well with movie showings, musicians, hair salon, manicurist, and pop up shops. I spent a lot of time on the outdoor patio on warmer days. Everyone is incredibly friendly and caring. I made lots of friends with the staff and other patients. Thank you for giving me the mental, emotional. And physical support I needed to get through a hard time. I highly recommend Sunharbor Manor based on my own personal experience.

This place is a dump. They need tohire more help to assist with the patients. I wish I could give this dump a negative rating. Steer clear of this the Amsterdam was a much nicer & attentive place for my mom.

Very very clean! Lots of smiles and great energy. Beautiful lobby. This is the preferred rehab by Winthrop hospital and now I know why. The therapy here was excellent. The nurses are really on top of their game. All’s the staff including management know every patient by their first name, it’s truly remarkable. I always had something to do, never a dull moment. I stayed for three months and had a different meal every single day. My favorite is the cheese and fruit tray they send around through out the day with all different snacks. Obviously my main focus on rating is the therapy since that’s why I came here in the first place, however, it’s nice to actually enjoy the ambiance and feel safe no matter where you are. Really nice outdoor area too but was only able to enjoy that the first month because weather changed. I was always a walker until my injury. I now do laps around the school track by my house. All thanks to the staff at Sunharbor. This is a very special place with special people. Thank you for everything. Cheers!

After touring several different facilities with my wife the nurse, lots of research, conversing with management, we chose Sunharbor for my grandfather's rehabilitation, and are beyond happy. From the charming lobby entrance, to the positive attitude of the staff, we knew gramps would receive good care, and he did. I am dumbfounded by some of these negative reviews posted as they do not describe the experience my grandfather and I had at all. We were ecstatic with the care. Michele the assistant administrator was so involved in communicating with my wife and I regularly. The therapy my grandfather received was phenomenal and I am looking into possibly him receiving therapy from the same team on the outside just for maintenance purposes because that is how great they were. Overall the nursing staff were very attentive and caring. He came home with a new eyeglass case given as a gift from one of the aids. On his down time there was a lot to do recreational wise. During early afternoon the facility tends to be busier which was good for stimulation and pushed him to socialize rather than isolate. Otherwise the facility was quiet and peaceful. He made a few friends during bingo that he'd have coffee with in the morning. He was there for the full 100 medicare days and I feel like he's a new man. Came home the day before Christmas Eve and the entire family was shocked by how happy and upbeat he was, and in great spirits. Better condition and attitude than before his fall. Sunharbor we thank you!Sincerely,The Sarcona Family

My mom, who has several health challenges, has been a resident here for several years. Overall she's had terrific care from an attentive and skilled staff. We've had experiences with other such facilities and Sunharbor excels in comparison.

My father was safe and well taken care of here. Gave us a piece of mind. They have a gym with what all new equipment and model kitchen and bathroom to practice on which I really liked. And newly renovated rooms with flat screens so my dad had all new furniture. Made him feel more comfortable. Like he was in a hotel rather than a rehab. The nursing and therapist were most impressive.

I am writing to express my appreciation to all the staff at Sunharbor Manor. From the time my dad was admitted he was treated with kindness, Respect and most of all dignity. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. The staff go out of the way to make sure the resident and family are ok . You have nurses that take the time to stop and listen to him and answer any questions he has about his medication and Doctor Appointments no matter how many time he ask the same questions . I can not say thank you enough to the rehab team that had my dad up and on his feet standing and walking . My dad is walking more now than he has in the past three years.I was asked what my dads discharge plan home was. When sitting back and going over how sick my dad is . I had to make one of the hardest decisions I would ever have to make . I realize that he can not go back to his forever home and be safe. So when I told them of my decision to have him come move in with me they did everything to help me make this possible . They reassured him that everything would work out and we were making the best decision for his health possible. If you want to see what real angels look like all you have to do is go see the team at Sunharbor Manor.Sincerely , Tarin Reagan

I fell in Florida visiting my brother. Fractured my tibia, was told I needed surgery. Flew back home and had the procedure. Went to Sunharbor, and it was the light at the end of the tunnel for me. They sent me for MRI and found a hematoma and blood clot. Not only did they save my life, but I actually walked out the front doors on my own with no assistance after 1 week. This is a very special place.

I love my father but he is very hard to please. We had him in glengarriff dialysis. Awful awful experience. We chose it because we are from Locust Valley and it’s closer to home. During my fathers second admission to Winthrop hospital, my daughters friend who’s a nurse at Winthrop had suggested Sunharbor because they have a great reputation and also have on-site dialysis. The difference in the experience was tremendous. So many caring nurses. And the physical therapy was excellent. My father walked out of those doors better than he walked before his initial fall. He was so happy here I really couldn't believe it. Happy with the care, the therapy, the quick bathroom service, the cleanliness, they tidy up your room during therapy, he said it was like a hotel. The food he loved, and we’re Italian! Most importantly they accepted his insurance and all covered, including the copay. This is a wonderful rehab and I highly recommend.

I had my mother in THREE different nursing facilities before we found Sunharbor. Sands, Belair, and Glengarriff. All were awful. None took care of my mom the way she needed to be taken care of. She has dementia with early onset Alzheimer’s, trouble walking, several surgeries including knee replacement, and a very specific medication regime. My dad passed so she is all my sister and I have. Sunharbor was our saving grace. The staff was incredible and the place is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. They took phenomenal care of her, and I saw this proven EVERY SINGLE DAY, because that is how often I visited her. Some of these reviews I don’t understand the bashing. How do you leave your loved one in a facility for years, and then complain? I don’t get it. My favorite part of sunharbor was how much the staff participated in activities with the patients and residents. And of course the therapy. INCREDIBLE THERAPY. I compared all facilities, amount of time she got at each place, what they did with her. She advanced leaps and bounds ahead of the other places while at sunharbor, after two weeks at the other rehabs she still couldn’t even stand. At sunharbor she was standing after DAYS! 4!! I can’t thank the nurses and therapists enough. You SAVED my moms life! And for that I am forever thankful to you.

My mother was a private pay here, 2012-2018 when she died in Jan. They killed her. Undisclosed accident in bathroom. She died of internal bleeding. Do not send your loved ones here

I’ve stayed here twice for therapy. Both visits were more than satisfying. I was given great therapy and had a room near the nurses station like I requested on the second floor because I know the staff there and they make me feel comfortable.

We are very happy with the care my dad received. The nursing staff was very informative and wound care nurse was great. The therapy program is very aggressive and the staff is always smiling and goes the extra mile.

This is an upscale rehab with upscale care. They accommodated all my mother’s requests from PT session time and menu. Most importantly she received intense therapy every day more than once per day. She practiced her regular movements and activities in the gym on the model kitchen and bathroom. We were very impressed with the care and my mother returned home healthy and strong.

I’m a nurse at Winthrop hospital and I do’s my research. The care managers all told me to send my mom to Sunharbor. Aggressive therapy program. Just what we were looking for and what she needed. She made friend and enjoyed her time there. As a nurse and daughter I highly recommend sunharbor for your loved one.

Thank you Sunharbor for the excellent care you gave my mother. Thank you to the nurses for being so loving. And to the therapists for working so hard to get my mom walking again. Thank you to all the staff for making her laugh and smile every day because I know this helped with her recovery. From beginning to end, Sunharbor was wonderful. My family and I can not say thank you enough.

They gave my dad the push and confidence he needed to get better after his long stay in the hospital. He went from being wheelchair bound, to walking out of sunharbor using just a cane. This rehab is filled with incredible therapists. And the nurses are very loving as well.

This is the best rehabilitation facility on LI by far. Very clean. Aggressive therapy. My dad was walking better than he did before his surgery thanks to the therapists. Food was great and nursing staff were living and very attentive.

The physical therapy here is better than I could have imagined. That alone gives this facility the full five stars.
