One of the five New York City boroughs, Jamaica, Queens, is home to more than 240,000 residents, 15% of whom are seniors aged 65 and older. As rates of Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss continue to surge nationwide, Jamaica has seen an immense increase of its own with rates rising 42.62% between 2014 and 2018. Cases increased from 305 to 435 during those years according to the Centers for Disease Control. Meanwhile, overall deaths only increased by 3.41% over the same time period, which underscores the enormous impact that Alzheimer’s is having upon the Jamaica community.
To help address this rise in cases, memory care communities in the area provide targeted, specialized care that can help offset or minimize the impact of mental decline within a safe and secure environment. Family members may also experience greater peace of mind as the burden of caregiving for their loved ones becomes a shared rather than an individual responsibility. In addition to a listing of memory care communities, this guide provides a resource directory that lists relevant local services and supports to help those with Alzheimer’s and their families. An overview of the cost of memory care is also included along with a comparison examining costs between various cities across New York.
The SeniorScore for Jamaica, NY
The SeniorScore for Jamaica is 62, significantly lower than both the New York score of 71 and the national average of 72. Determined through more than 100 variables from public and private databases, SeniorScore breaks the resulting score down into four categories. Of these, Jamaica scored highest for Health & Safety with a 65 followed by Recreation & Leisure with a 57.
It’s no wonder that Jamaica received its highest score for Health & Safety. Seniors living here have access to some of the highest-ranked health care in both the state and nation, including the very best neurological care available. Jamaica residents also can choose from thousands of nearby pharmacies and hundreds of senior living communities.
Even though Jamaica lost some points in the Recreation & Leisure category because of the low percentage of seniors, its proximity to many other Queens neighborhoods as well as the other NYC boroughs gives seniors more opportunities to develop relationships and enjoy social events with others. In addition to having some of the most diverse and beloved cultural organizations, parks and restaurants, the Queens area offers seniors a number of senior centers that provide programs tailored to meet their interests and needs.
Jamaica’s lowest score is a 49 for Finances due in large part to the cost of living, which is enormously high when compared with national costs. The expense of living in one of the most populated and desirable cities in the world has a trickle-down effect that affects costs from care to property taxes to groceries. Because household median incomes are only marginally higher than the national average, residents aren’t easily able to offset the high living costs.
Memory Care Costs in Jamaica, NY
In Jamaica and throughout the country, memory care typically costs 20%-30% more than assisted living. This is because memory care units within assisted living communities require staff to receive training to meet the emotional, cognitive and social needs of those living with Alzheimer’s. Staff must also be available 24/7, and added security features are required to keep residents safe. To give a general idea of these added expenses, 25% has been added to the cost of assisted living as shown on Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey.
At $7,489 per month, memory care costs in Jamaica are about 25% higher than costs in New York. The difference is even greater nationally with memory care in Jamaica costing approximately 39% more. Prices vary further among communities depending on the specific amenities and services they offer.
Compared to other cities in New York, Jamaica is on the more expensive end for memory care. Two hours north, costs in Poughkeepsie are $6,443, while Albany, the state capital, has even lower costs at $6,000 per month. In the central portion of the state, costs in smaller cities, such as Binghamton and Rochester, are similar to Poughkeepsie’s prices. Costs drop below the state average in Syracuse where memory care costs $5,879, while Ithaca has the highest costs anywhere in the state at $16,875. Despite being one of the largest cities in the state, Buffalo has the lowest costs for memory care at $5,706 per month.
