New York’s SeniorScore is 73, which is higher than the New York state average of 71 and one point higher than the national average of 72. Of the four categories, New York scores highest for Health & Safety, at 79, and Recreation & Leisure, at 72.
New York seniors live in the epicenter for quality health care in the United States and the location of more than eight hospitals and medical centers that rank highly for geriatrics, including Mount Sinai, which is ranked number one in the country. There are also a very high number of Medicare-registered physicians as well as 370 senior living communities within close proximity of the city.
New York also scores quite high in the Recreation & Leisure category, largely due to the vast array of amenities available in the city. Seniors can golf at more than 200 nearby courses, walk and relax at one of the 60 parks, such as world-famous Central Park, or find a spiritual connection at one of thousands of places of worship. There are an endless variety of options for entertainment and relaxation, including numerous public libraries, museums, cuisine choices and bus tours.
Scores of 54 in both the Finances and General Quality of Life point to New York’s very high property and state income taxes as well as senior care costs. Although New York’s cost of living is high compared to the national average, this should be kept in context with the higher household and per capita incomes of earners living here. And while New York has a dense population and longer commute times, seniors can rely on various forms of reduced-cost transportation and enjoy the walkability that living in the city affords.
Memory Care Costs in New York, NY
Aside from nursing home care, which is the most costly type of care, memory care is the second most expensive form of senior care in New York, averaging 20%-30% more per month than assisted living. To give the most accurate representation of memory care costs, we added a 25% premium to assisted living costs for each location in this guide.
At $8,688 per month, memory care expenses in New York City are significantly higher than the statewide average of $5,788, costing on average $2,890 more each month. The difference is even greater when compared to the national average, which at $5,064 is more than $3,000 less than in New York City.
Memory care costs in other New York cities vary widely. Compared with New York City, where seniors can expect to pay approximately $8,688 per month, seniors further upstate can expect lower costs. There are exceptions, such as in Ithaca ($8,875) and Watertown ($9,113), where memory care costs exceed what seniors pay in New York. Two hours north, prices are significantly lower in Kingston ($5,125) while they rise to $5,656 in Albany. Closer to the Vermont border, costs in Glens Falls are similar to those in Kingston, and in the central part of the state, memory care in Syracuse ($5,041) is similarly priced. Costs in the small city of Utica are lowest, at $4,913 per month, which is nearly $4,000 less than the average in New York City.

NYC Department for the Aging By partnering with hundreds of community-based organizations, the NYC Department for the Aging provides a comprehensive set of services and programs for seniors living in the city. In addition to providing health insurance counseling and assistance, the DFTA funds more than 200 senior centers, which offer a wide variety of activities, events and services, such as chronic self-disease management, technology classes, recreational trips and much more.
