Salisbury, Maryland, located on the state’s Eastern Shore, is home to 32,935 residents of whom 11.5% are over the age of 65. While deaths from Alzheimer’s are an increasing health care issue in many locations, Salisbury has done a good job at limiting the number of deaths from this disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control, between 2014 and 2018 Salisbury saw zero growth in the number of Alzheimer’s deaths in the community. This was a much better result than the number of overall deaths which rose 12.12%.
Several programs and memory care community organizations enable Salisbury to deal successfully with Alzheimer’s and dementia. These measures include facilities that care for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia which provide therapies, around-the-clock supervision and appropriate memory care. This guide provides you with more information about memory care in Salisbury, its costs and the resources available to you or your loved ones to help you pay for care.
The SeniorScore for Salisbury, MD
The SeniorScore is a great way for seniors to get an overview of the livability of a community. The Senior Scare is composed of 100 data points taken from government and private databases and broken down into an overall score and scores in four categories including Health & Safety, Recreation & Leisure, Finances and General Quality Of Health. Salisbury’s overall score is 68, which is lower than the Maryland average of 78 and the national average of 72.
Salisbury’s best mark came in General Quality of Life with a 64. While the city receives a lot of rain each year, it has mild mean temperatures with pleasant summers and agreeable winters. The area has below average air quality and an average population density. Its next best mark came in Finances with a 60. Property taxes in the community are significantly lower than national averages, as is the city sales tax. What hurts seniors financially is that assisted living costs, nursing home costs and adult daycare costs are all significantly higher than national averages.
The community's lowest marks came in Health & Safety and Recreation & Leisure, both scoring 59. Although there are many Medicare-registered physicians within the area, there are only three hospitals within range of the community and 17 senior living facilities in proximity. Salisbury also has very high property and violent crime rates. There are four parks in the community for recreation and one movie theater. One reason for the lack of recreational amenities for seniors is the relatively low number of those aged at least 65 in the community.
Memory Care Costs in Salisbury, MD
Memory care units, which house seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia, are found in special units within assisted living facilities. These units provide around-the-clock supervision to ensure seniors don’t wander away. Staff members are also specially trained to help residents who have memory care issues and provide them with special therapies to help alleviate their condition. While there are no local, state or federal statistics on the extra cost of memory care, these memory care units are often 20 to 30% more expensive than a regular assisted living room. Therefore, when calculating memory care costs we use figures for assisted living from the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 and add 25%.
Salisbury has one of the higher costs of memory care in the state of Maryland at $6,875 a month. That’s slightly more than $600 above the state average of $6,250 a month. Salisbury also cost more than $1,500 a month than the US average for memory care of $5,375
Although facilities in Maryland are more expensive than the national average, Salisbury is not the most expensive city in the state for memory care. The city of California has the most expensive memory care costs in the state of $7,750 a month. Salisbury is next and then the city of Baltimore, the state capital, at $6,250 a month. Prices are considerably less expensive the farther west you go in Maryland, with Cumberland, near the border with Pennsylvania, averaging $5,831 a month. Hagerstown, near the site of the Civil War battle of Antietam, has the lowest price in Maryland at $5,625.
